Milk Donor Kelly: From recipient mom to donor

Mothers Milk Bank Recipient

When I was 23 weeks pregnant, we found out that our son had a congenital heart defect.

As we learned more about what his birth story would look like, with an impending surgery anticipated shortly after birth his team of doctors emphasized the importance of breast milk for him.

While I had planned to breastfeed, as a first-time mom the unknown of what my body would or wouldn’t be able to do became a lightning rod for worry/fear. I expressed this fear to his cardiologist at a prenatal appointment and she shared with me the availability of donor milk if it became necessary.

I can’t explain what a relief that was to hear. Sure enough, when my milk supply was delayed donor milk saved the day! My son benefited from donor milk during his NICU stay until I was able to produce enough milk.

Fast forward past his successful surgery, I am now able to donate excess milk. I am so grateful for the donor milk we received and so glad to be able to provide milk to families in need as a donor.
